THIS IS A COPY OF A GENUINE LETTER SENT TO DAVID

MILLIBAND.....................

NIGEL JOHNSON-HILL, PARKFARM, MILLAND, LIPHOOK GU30 7JT

Rt Hon David Miliband MP
Secretary of State.
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA),
Nobel House
17 Smith Square
London
SW1P 3JR

16 July 2009

Dear Secretary of State,
My friend, who is in farming at the moment, recently received a cheque
for £3,000 from the Rural Payments Agency for not rearing pigs.. I would
now like to join the "not rearing pigs" business.

In your opinion, what is the best kind of farm not to rear pigs on, and
which is the best breed of pigs not to rear? I want to be sure I
approach this endeavour in keeping with all government policies, as
dictated by the EU under the Common Agricultural Policy.

I would prefer not to rear bacon pigs, but if this is not the type you
want not rearing, I will just as gladly not rear porkers. Are there any
advantages in not rearing rare breeds such as Saddlebacks or Gloucester

Old Spots, or are there too many people already not rearing these?
As I see it, the hardest part of this programme will be keeping an
accurate record of how many pigs I haven't reared. Are there any
Government or Local Authority courses on this?

My friend is very satisfied with this business. He has been rearing pigs
for forty years or so, and the best he ever made on them was £1,422 in
1968. That is - until this year, when he received a cheque for not
rearing any.

If I get £3,000 for not rearing 50 pigs, will I get £6,000 for not
rearing 100? I plan to operate on a small scale at first, holding myself
down to about 4,000 pigs not raised, which will mean about £240,000 for
the first year. As I become more expert in not rearing pigs, I plan to
be more ambitious, perhaps increasing to, say, 40,000 pigs not reared in

my second year, for which I should expect about £2.4 million from your
department. Incidentally, I wonder if I would be eligible to receive
tradable carbon credits for all these pigs not producing harmful and
polluting methane gases?

Another point: These pigs that I plan not to rear will not eat 2,000
tonnes of cereals. I understand that you also pay farmers for not
growing crops. Will I qualify for payments for not growing cereals to
not feed the pigs I don't rear?

I am also considering the "not milking cows" business, so please send
any information you have on that too. Please could you also include the
current Defra advice on set aside fields? Can this be done on an
e-commerce basis with virtual fields (of which I seem to have several
thousand hectares)?

In view of the above you will realise that I will be totally unemployed,
and will therefore qualify for unemployment benefits. I shall of course
be voting for your party at the next general election.

Yours faithfully,

Nigel Johnson-Hill

Name : nuttcp
Arch : x86_64
Version : 5.5.5
Release : 3.fc12
Size : 54 k
Repo : fedora
Summary : Tool for testing TCP connections
URL : ftp://ftp.lcp.nrl.navy.mil/pub/nuttcp/
License : Public Domain
Description: nuttcp is a network performance measurement tool intended for use by
: network and system managers. Its most basic usage is to determine the
: raw TCP (or UDP) network layer throughput by transferring memory buffers
: from a source system across an interconnecting network to a destination
: system, either transferring data for a specified time interval, or
: alternatively transferring a specified number of buffers. In addition
: to reporting the achieved network throughput in Mbps, nuttcp also
: provides additional useful information related to the data transfer
: such as user, system, and wall-clock time, transmitter and receiver
: CPU utilization, and loss percentage (for UDP transfers).

Most interesting. Walked across the bridge by Waterloo Station and fired up googolebuzz on the iPhone. Could not detect where I was. Map took an age to load and no local "buzzes" where found. Eventually it had me located to approx 300m away from where I actually was.

I'm sure this'll get better though. Actually quite interesting to see what people are saying whilst they are using it. Most of it is line noise, (like this), but I'm sure there'll be a "flashmob" or three soon

Fedora updates

Installed Gnome Desktop Environment last night in order to get a dual-monitor working environment.

yum groupinstall "Gnome Desktop Environment"

Simple set up with "system/preferences/display". Click click and now I've got two screens. How did I live without it? I normally use fluxbox as my window manager. Fluxbox is very minimal, light and fast. However, the last thing that I wanted to do was dick about with X11, Xorg, or what ever. Gnome has made this process so simple that I'll consider using it full time.

using comments at runtime

I maintain Linux-based systems. Sometimes on my own but mainly with other people. Normally we know what we are doing and why. Problems arise when you need to look back on a system to know who did what and why. May not always be clear from `history`. Why did user create this file? What did s/he need to edit /path/to/foo for?

This is a work around designed to be useful for me. Just slap a # "hash" after a command and use the remainder of the command as a place to store comments.

Fedora's bash shell completion

Once upon a time you had to dig around in /usr/share/doc/bash-version/ to get some idea of how to get tabbed completions of options working on your Fedora-based system. A few examples showed how to get it going.

Now there's a package for it:-

Installed Packages
Name : bash-completion
Arch : noarch
Epoch : 1
Version : 1.1
Release : 4.fc12
Size : 453 k
Repo : installed
From repo : updates
Summary : Programmable completion for Bash
URL : http://bash-completion.alioth.debian.org/
License : GPLv2+
Description: bash-completion is a collection of shell functions that take advantage
: of the programmable completion feature of bash 2.

A few handy tool, especially for those programs that have a lot of command-line switches. rsync, (see if it's installed on your system with `which rsync`), is one such example.

Once installed you use the bash completion package like this.

command --[tab][tab]

or

command --letter[tab]

rsync --verbose --dry-run --
